Ryan's Major Takeaways (MTs) | Stars @ Rangers | Game 43 | January 12th, 2023

This one is going to sting for a while. Literally a last second goal and then didn't control puck in overtime. Here's some of my takeaways!

Just A Feeling

I talked about this feeling on the after game review episode about the Stars leaning more heavily on the defensive side of the game which is perfectly fine because that has been the focus and identity of this team the last half decade, but I feel like it's TOO much. It's shifted from a balanced attack to more defense the last two weeks or so. We've pulled out some wins I thought shouldn't have happened. I would like to see more aggressiveness out of the Stars in the game on Saturday.

Scoring On Scoring Chances

With that being said, it's not like the Stars didn't have their chances in the game either. Heiskanen plunking the puck off the pipe early in the 3rd is surely keeping him up tonight and giving him nightmares this evening. However, it's been consistent lately that the Stars have not been burying their chances when they've needed it.

Seguin Has Stepped Up

With the absence of Roope Hintz due to injury, Tyler Seguin has stepped up nicely fulfilling the 1st line center role. In tonight's game, he was directly responsible for drawing the call that lead to his powerplay goal late in the 2nd period. Assuming Hintz plays on Saturday (keeping my fingers crossed on that one), hopefully this can jump start Seguin into providing more offense, and we need it right now!

Final Thoughts

I thought tonight's overtime loss was a point lost compared to a point gained. It's frustrating to watch your team play well defensively, get elite goaltending, win the special teams battle, and still not win the game because they only scored one goal. We need more! Looking at you Seguin, Benn, & Marchment!
