Ryan's Major Takeaways (MTs) | Stars vs. Blues | Game 1 | October 12th, 2023

My major takeaways are back! The Stars pull off a shootout win over the St. Louis Blues by a final score of 2-1. I'm going to try to be more consistent with them this season. No matter how tired I am! Let's get right into it!

Takeaway #1 - Hintz Not Playing = Good

We talked about it on our latest episode, but I really think keeping Hintz out of the first game of the season is smart. This will basically give him another week to get over whatever is bothering him right now. The worst thing about Hintz is how injury prone he can be, but we need him to be as close to 100% as we can get. I look forward to seeing how he plays on Tuesday.

Takeaway #2 - Goaltending Was Amazing

I was shocked that the score of the game was only 1-1. Part of it was the number of posts hit throughout the game, but Binnington and Oettinger both were absolutely stellar. Some of the saves they made were immediately save-of-the-year candidates. Binnington's glove save on Pavelski in the second period was very Oettinger-esque from his play in last year's playoffs. Oettinger looks exactly how everyone views him; as a top 5 goalie in the league and a Vezina trophy contender.

Takeaway #3 - OT/SO Blues (see what I did there?!)

One of the biggest storylines for the Stars heading into this season was how they were going to fix their overtime and shootout woes. The Stars went 8-14 in overtime last season and weren't a ton better in the shootout. It was nice to see this season start off with a post-regulation win to set up good vibes when it comes to post-regulation hockey. Pavelski's face on the Stars' tweet was my face heading into overtime. Yes, I was worried.
